The idea
Lassen + infinitive means having something done for you: sich vormerken lassen, sich beraten lassen. The reflexive pronoun sits early in the sentence and the two infinitives go last. Erfahren von + dative means to hear about something. Die Zusage is a confirmation or offer of a place, the opposite of die Absage. “Eine Warteliste führen” is the usual phrase for keeping a list.
Other ways to say it
“Können Sie mich auf die Warteliste setzen?” – Direct and polite; auf + accusative for being put on the list.
“Wie viele Leute stehen gerade auf der Warteliste?” – Neutral; helps you judge your chances.

Watch out
“Kann ich für diesen Kurs vormerken?” → “Kann ich mich für diesen Kurs vormerken lassen?”: Vormerken needs an object, and here someone else notes your name. German expresses that with the reflexive pronoun mich and lassen.
