The idea
Eine Frage stellen is the ordinary combination for asking. Aufwerfen introduces an issue that needs thought; klären resolves uncertainty and is not always just giving a short answer. Offenlassen means the question remains unresolved. Hinterfragen takes an idea or assumption as its object rather than functioning as a replacement for every use of fragen.
