A collocation is a usual word combination. Learn a German noun together with its verb: eine Frage stellen (ask a question), eine Entscheidung treffen (make a decision) and einen Fehler machen (make a mistake). This prevents word-for-word translations that sound unnatural.

The idea
Keep the whole phrase, including the article or pronoun: eine Frage stellen, eine Entscheidung treffen, sich Zeit nehmen. Conjugate the verb, but keep its partner: Ich stelle eine Frage; ich nehme mir Zeit.

Why make, do and take do not map to one German verb
English make does not always become machen: make a decision is eine Entscheidung treffen, but make a mistake is einen Fehler machen. A literal translation also fails for take an exam: eine Prüfung ablegen means sit the exam, while eine Prüfung bestehen means pass it. Learn the pronoun as well: sich Zeit nehmen becomes Ich nehme mir Zeit. With separable aufnehmen, say Ich nehme Kontakt auf; its perfect form is Ich habe Kontakt aufgenommen.

English make, do and take have no single German equivalent. Taking an exam is eine Prüfung ablegen; passing it is eine Prüfung bestehen. Do not promise success when you only mean taking the exam.
