German erzählen versus berichten: meaning and use

The idea

Use erzählen for telling a story or sharing an experience. Use berichten for reporting information about an event. Read the complete sentence before choosing: the object, situation, time reference and relationship between speakers can determine the better expression. Both can use von or über; berichten often sounds more factual or official.
