The idea

Unter, vor, an and other two-way prepositions take the dative for a fixed location: unter dem Kragen, am Ärmel. Könnte (Konjunktiv II of können) expresses a guess. “Wodurch” asks for the cause: “Wodurch ist er entstanden?” “Behandeln” means to treat a stain. “Noch nichts daran gemacht” uses daran for the stain: nothing done to it yet.

Other ways to say it

“Am linken Ärmel ist ein Fettfleck.” – Names place and type of stain in one short sentence.

“Ich habe den Fleck schon mit Wasser behandelt.” – Tells the cleaner what you already tried; useful information.

Examples

  • Der Fleck sitzt vorne unter dem Kragen. The stain is on the front below the collar.
  • Wissen Sie, wodurch er entstanden ist?Do you know what caused it?
  • Es könnte Kaffee sein, aber ich bin nicht sicher. It might be coffee, but I am not sure.
  • Haben Sie die Stelle schon behandelt?Have you already treated the spot?
  • Nein, ich habe noch nichts daran gemacht. No, I have not done anything to it yet.
  • Dann notiere ich Ihre Angaben so.Then I will note your information that way.

Watch out

“Der Fleck sitzt vorne unter den Kragen.” → “Der Fleck sitzt vorne unter dem Kragen.”: The stain is in a fixed place, so unter answers “where?” and takes the dative: dem Kragen. Den Kragen would suggest movement.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The stain is on the front below the collar.

    Show answer or example answer

Der Fleck sitzt vorne unter dem Kragen.

“Der Fleck” is the subject; “sitzt” describes its position, and “vorne unter dem Kragen” combines a direction word with a dative location.

  2. Put the words in order: aber / bin / Es / ich / Kaffee / könnte / nicht / sein / sicher

    Show answer or example answer

Es könnte Kaffee sein, aber ich bin nicht sicher.

“Es könnte … sein” expresses a guess; after “aber”, a second main clause adds the uncertainty.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will note your information that way.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann notiere ich Ihre Angaben so.

“Dann” opens the sentence; “Ihre Angaben” is the accusative object, and “so” means in exactly this way.

Use it today

Choose a piece of clothing with a mark and write three sentences for a cleaner: where the stain is, what it might be, and whether you treated it.
