The idea

Fehlen takes the person in the dative and the missing thing as subject: “Uns fehlt noch ein Nachtisch.” Ihr/euch addresses several friends at once. Könnte (Konjunktiv II of können) makes an offer sound open. Mitbringen is separable but stays together after a modal. Nachspeise and Nachtisch both mean dessert. Sich um etwas kümmern means to take care of something.

Other ways to say it

“Soll ich etwas mitbringen?” – Short, casual and very common before any visit.

“Ich kümmere mich gern um die Getränke.” – Friendly offer to take one task off the hosts.

Examples

  • Was fehlt euch noch für das gemeinsame Essen? What do you still need for the shared meal?
  • Eine Nachspeise wäre noch schön.A dessert would still be nice.
  • Ich könnte einen Obstsalat mitbringen.I could bring a fruit salad.
  • Für wie viele Personen würdest du ihn machen? How many people would you make it for?
  • Ich plane die Menge für acht.I am planning enough for eight.
  • Dann kümmert sich sonst niemand um Nachtisch. Then nobody else will handle dessert.

Watch out

“Was vermisst ihr noch für das Essen?” → “Was fehlt euch noch für das Essen?”: Vermissen means to miss someone emotionally or to notice something is lost. For things still needed, German uses fehlen with the person in the dative.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: What do you still need for the shared meal?

    Show answer or example answer

Was fehlt euch noch für das gemeinsame Essen?

“Was” is the subject of fehlt; “euch” is dative plural for the hosts, and “für das gemeinsame Essen” is accusative after für.

  2. Put the words in order: einen / Ich / könnte / mitbringen / Obstsalat

    Show answer or example answer

    Ich könnte einen Obstsalat mitbringen.

“Könnte” makes the offer tentative; “einen Obstsalat” is masculine accusative, and “mitbringen” ends the sentence.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then nobody else will handle dessert.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann kümmert sich sonst niemand um Nachtisch.

“Sich kümmern um” is reflexive with um + accusative; “sonst niemand” means nobody else, which avoids two desserts.
