The idea

Sich treffen is reflexive: wir treffen uns. A verb-first question with wir makes a suggestion. Hinter- as an adjective comes from hinten and takes endings: der hintere Eingang, am hinteren Eingang. Vorne and hinten are adverbs; hinter is the preposition. “Wird … gesperrt” is the passive for an ongoing closure. “Nur der Eingang ändert sich” uses reflexive sich ändern.

Other ways to say it

“Lass uns lieber am Seiteneingang treffen.” – Casual suggestion with lass uns (let us).

“Planänderung: Wir treffen uns hinten statt vorne.” – Short chat style; statt contrasts the old and new place.

Examples

  • Treffen wir uns lieber am hinteren Eingang?Shall we meet at the rear entrance instead?
  • Warum möchtest du den Treffpunkt ändern? Why would you like to change the meeting point?
  • Vorne wird gerade der Gehweg gesperrt. The pavement at the front is being closed right now.
  • Gut, die Uhrzeit bleibt aber gleich?Good, but the time stays the same?
  • Ja, nur der Eingang ändert sich.Yes, only the entrance changes.
  • Dann warte ich hinten neben dem Fahrradständer. Then I will wait at the back beside the bicycle rack.

Watch out

“Treffen wir uns lieber am hinter Eingang?” → “Treffen wir uns lieber am hinteren Eingang?”: Hinter is a preposition and cannot describe a noun. The adjective is hinter- with endings; after am (an dem) it needs -en: am hinteren Eingang.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Shall we meet at the rear entrance instead?

    Show answer or example answer

Treffen wir uns lieber am hinteren Eingang?

Verb-first “Treffen wir uns” makes a suggestion; “lieber” means instead, and “am hinteren Eingang” is dative with -en.

  2. Put the words in order: der / Gehweg / gerade / gesperrt / Vorne / wird

    Show answer or example answer

Vorne wird gerade der Gehweg gesperrt.

Present passive “wird … gesperrt” with “gerade” for something happening now; “vorne” is first, so the verb follows.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will wait at the back beside the bicycle rack.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann warte ich hinten neben dem Fahrradständer.

“Hinten” is the adverb of place; “neben dem Fahrradständer” is dative, giving an exact landmark.
