The idea

Mitnehmen is taking something away from where you are; mitbringen is bringing something to where you are going. “Etwas vom Salat” (some of the salad) uses von + dative. Mitgeben means to give someone something to take along. Die Dose (container) is feminine, so the demonstrative die refers back to it at the start of the last line. Friends use du.

Other ways to say it

“Nimm dir ruhig noch etwas für morgen mit.” – Casual and generous; ruhig means feel free.

“Soll ich dir den Rest einpacken?” – Practical offer; einpacken means to pack up.

Watch out

“Möchtest du etwas vom Salat mitbringen?” → “Möchtest du etwas vom Salat mitnehmen?”: English “take” and “bring” map onto mitnehmen and mitbringen by direction. Leftovers leave the host’s home with the guest, so the verb is mitnehmen.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Would you like to take some of the salad home?

    Show answer or example answer

Möchtest du etwas vom Salat mitnehmen?

“Möchtest du” offers politely; “etwas vom Salat” means a part of it, and “mitnehmen” stays whole at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: da / Es / für / genug / ist / noch / uns

    Show answer or example answer

Es ist noch genug für uns da.

“Es ist … da” means there is; “noch genug für uns” reassures the guest that the hosts will not miss it.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will bring it back to you next time.

    Show answer or example answer

Die bringe ich dir beim nächsten Mal zurück.

“Die” refers to die Dose and stands first; zurückbringen splits, and “beim nächsten Mal” gives the time.

Use it today

Write a short exchange at the end of a dinner in which the host offers leftovers, the guest accepts politely, and they agree about the container.
