The idea

Sich verabschieden (to say goodbye) needs the reflexive pronoun: ich verabschiede mich. Etwas früher uses the comparative of früh. Deshalb (that is why) is an adverb, not a conjunction, so the verb comes straight after it: “deshalb nehme ich …”. “Um neun” gives a clock time. “Wenn wir ihn gleich trinken” is a condition with the verb at the end; ihn refers to der Tee.

Other ways to say it

“Ich mache mich gleich auf den Weg, ich muss morgen früh raus.” – Casual; früh raus müssen means having to get up early.

“Leider muss ich schon los. Danke für den schönen Abend!” – Short, warm and common; los müssen is colloquial.

Examples

  • Ich muss mich heute etwas früher verabschieden.I need to say goodbye a little earlier today.
  • Hast du morgen einen frühen Termin?Do you have an early appointment tomorrow?
  • Ja, deshalb nehme ich den Zug um neun.Yes, that is why I am taking the train at nine.
  • Möchtest du vorher noch einen Tee?Would you like a tea before then?
  • Gern, wenn wir ihn gleich trinken.Gladly, if we drink it now.
  • Dann bleibt noch Zeit für einen kurzen Tee.Then there is still time for a quick tea.

Watch out

“Ja, deshalb ich nehme den Zug um neun.” → “Ja, deshalb nehme ich den Zug um neun.”: Deshalb fills the first position like any adverb, so the verb nehme must come second and the subject ich follows. English word order (“so I take”) misleads here.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I need to say goodbye a little earlier today.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich muss mich heute etwas früher verabschieden.

Modal “muss” plus reflexive “mich … verabschieden”; the infinitive goes last, and “etwas früher” softens the message.

  2. Put the words in order: den / deshalb / ich / Ja / nehme / neun / um / Zug

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, deshalb nehme ich den Zug um neun.

“Deshalb” is first, “nehme” second, then “ich”; “um neun” gives the departure time of the train.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then there is still time for a quick tea.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann bleibt noch Zeit für einen kurzen Tee.

“Dann” links to the agreement; “bleibt noch Zeit” means there is still time, with “für einen kurzen Tee” in the accusative.

Use it today

Write what you would say to leave a friend’s birthday party early: announce it, give a reason, and thank the host.
