The idea

Falls and wenn both introduce conditions; falls stresses that something may or may not happen. The verb goes to the end: falls es regnet. Weather verbs use es: es regnet. German often uses the present for future plans: Was machen wir …? Morgen früh means tomorrow morning; bis neun means by nine at the latest. Schreiben takes a dative receiver: der Gruppe.

Other ways to say it

“Habt ihr einen Plan B, falls das Wetter schlecht wird?” – Casual; Plan B is common in German too.

“Bei Regen treffen wir uns einfach bei mir.” – Casual; bei Regen is a compact way to say if it rains.

Examples

  • Was machen wir, falls es beim Picknick regnet? What will we do if it rains during the picnic?
  • Wir könnten in den Gemeinschaftsraum wechseln. We could move to the shared room.
  • Ist der Raum dann überhaupt verfügbar? Will the room actually be available then?
  • Das frage ich heute noch nach.I will ask about that today.
  • Entscheiden wir morgen früh gemeinsam?Shall we decide together tomorrow morning?
  • Ja, ich schreibe der Gruppe bis neun.Yes, I will write to the group by nine.

Watch out

“Entscheiden wir morgen Morgen gemeinsam?” → “Entscheiden wir morgen früh gemeinsam?”: German avoids morgen Morgen because it repeats the same word. For tomorrow morning use morgen früh; other parts of the day work normally: morgen Abend.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: What will we do if it rains during the picnic?

    Show answer or example answer

Was machen wir, falls es beim Picknick regnet?

“Was machen wir” uses the present for a future plan; the falls-clause ends with “regnet”, and “beim Picknick” is dative.

  2. Put the words in order: dann / der / Ist / Raum / überhaupt / verfügbar

    Show answer or example answer

Ist der Raum dann überhaupt verfügbar?

“Überhaupt” in the question expresses doubt: is the room available at all? “Verfügbar” means available.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Yes, I will write to the group by nine.

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, ich schreibe der Gruppe bis neun.

“Der Gruppe” is the dative receiver of schreiben; “bis neun” sets the deadline for the message.

Use it today

Write a group message for an outdoor plan: ask what you will do if it rains, suggest one indoor option, and say when you will decide.
