The idea

Liegen describes where rooms, flats and buildings are located: Das Zimmer liegt im dritten Stock. Nebeneinander (next to each other) is one word. Eine Buchung läuft auf einen Namen means it is registered under that name. Derselbe Name (the same name) declines both parts: unter demselben Namen. Als Wunsch notieren means to note as a preference, not a guarantee.

Other ways to say it

“Wäre es möglich, uns Zimmer auf derselben Etage zu geben?” – Asks for the same floor, a more modest request.

“Haben Sie Verbindungszimmer frei?” – Asks for connecting rooms with a door between them.

Examples

  • Könnten unsere Zimmer möglichst nebeneinander liegen?Could our rooms be next to each other if possible?
  • Sind beide Buchungen unter demselben Namen? Are both bookings under the same name?
  • Nein, die zweite läuft auf Berger. No, the second is under Berger.
  • Ich prüfe die verfügbaren Zimmer gemeinsam.I will check the available rooms together.
  • Eine Etage wäre schon hilfreich. The same floor would already help.
  • Dann notiere ich das als Ihren Wunsch. Then I will note that as your preference.

Watch out

“Könnten unsere Zimmer möglichst nebeneinander stehen?” → “Könnten unsere Zimmer möglichst nebeneinander liegen?”: German uses liegen for the position of rooms, towns and buildings. Stehen is for upright objects such as furniture, so it sounds odd for rooms.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could our rooms be next to each other if possible?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten unsere Zimmer möglichst nebeneinander liegen?

Könnten opens a polite question. Unsere Zimmer is the plural subject, möglichst softens, and nebeneinander liegen ends the sentence.

  2. Put the words in order: auf / Berger / die / läuft / Nein / zweite

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, die zweite läuft auf Berger.

Die zweite stands for die zweite Buchung. Laufen auf + name means registered under that name.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will note that as your preference.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann notiere ich das als Ihren Wunsch.

Notiere is first person after dann. Das refers to the request, and als Ihren Wunsch is accusative after als, matching das.
