The idea

“Lassen” plus infinitive means to have something done by someone else: “Ich lasse den Schlüssel nachmachen”, “Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden.” With möchte, both infinitives go to the end: nachmachen lassen. “Zum Auftrag gehören” means to be part of the order. “Abnehmen von” means to take off: “Ich nehme ihn vom Ring ab.” “Ob” sends the modal to the end: “ob wir ihn kopieren können”.

Other ways to say it

“Können Sie mir diesen Schlüssel zweimal kopieren?” – Adds the number of copies; neutral.

“Ich brauche einen Nachschlüssel für den Briefkasten.” – Nachschlüssel is a duplicate key; names what it opens.

Examples

  • Ich möchte nur diesen kleinen Schlüssel nachmachen lassen.I would like only this small key copied.

  • Genau, die anderen gehören nicht zum Auftrag.Exactly; the others are not part of the order.
  • Darf ich ihn kurz einzeln ansehen?May I look at it separately for a moment?
  • Ja, ich nehme ihn vom Ring ab.Yes, I will take it off the ring.

Watch out

“Ich möchte diesen kleinen Schlüssel nachmachen.” → “Ich möchte diesen kleinen Schlüssel nachmachen lassen.”: Without lassen, the sentence says you will copy the key yourself. To ask a professional to do it, German adds lassen at the end.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like only this small key copied.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich möchte nur diesen kleinen Schlüssel nachmachen lassen.

“Möchte” is second; “nur diesen kleinen Schlüssel” is accusative, and the infinitive pair “nachmachen lassen” ends the sentence.

  2. Put the words in order: anderen / Auftrag / die / gehören / Genau / nicht / zum

    Show answer or example answer

Genau, die anderen gehören nicht zum Auftrag.

“Genau” confirms; “die anderen” refers to the other keys, and “zum Auftrag” is zu + dem after gehören.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we will check whether we can copy it.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann prüfen wir, ob wir ihn kopieren können.

“Dann prüfen wir” announces a step; the ob-clause ends with “kopieren können”, the modal last.

Use it today

Write two sentences you could say at a key counter: which key you want copied, how many copies, and that the other keys are not part of the order.
