The idea

“Sich lassen” plus infinitive works like a passive of possibility: “Die Tür lässt sich nicht öffnen” (the door cannot be opened). Hineinpassen (to fit in) is separable, so hinein moves to the end of its clause. “Laut” plus a noun means according to: laut Beschriftung. “Aufschließen” means to unlock; its opposite is abschließen. The past “konnte” (Präteritum of können) is the usual form for past ability.

Other ways to say it

“Der Schlüssel klemmt im Schloss.” – Klemmen means to stick or jam; short and common.

“Das Schloss geht schwer, ich bekomme die Tür nicht auf.” – Casual description of a stiff lock.

Watch out

“Der Schlüssel passt hinein, aber dreht nicht.” → “Der Schlüssel passt hinein, lässt sich aber nicht drehen.”: Drehen needs an object or sich; a key does not turn by itself. Use “lässt sich nicht drehen” or “dreht sich nicht”. A new clause after aber also needs its own subject: “aber er dreht sich nicht”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The key fits in but will not turn.

    Show answer or example answer

Der Schlüssel passt hinein, lässt sich aber nicht drehen.

Two clauses share the subject “Der Schlüssel”; the second uses “lässt sich … drehen” and places “aber” after the verb.

  2. Put the words in order: Beschriftung / er / Fahrradraum / gehört / Laut / zum

    Show answer or example answer

Laut Beschriftung gehört er zum Fahrradraum.

“Laut Beschriftung” opens the sentence, so “gehört” comes second; “zum Fahrradraum” is zu + dem.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will show you exactly what happens.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich zeige Ihnen, was genau passiert.

“Zeigen” takes the dative “Ihnen”; the indirect question “was genau passiert” puts the verb at the end.
