The idea

Library German has fixed terms: ausleihen (borrow), verlängern (renew), vormerken (reserve), zurückbringen or zurückgeben (return), das Exemplar (copy), die Zweigstelle (branch). “Bis wann” asks for a deadline. In “Ich prüfe, ob eine andere Zweigstelle eins hat”, the ob-clause sends the verb to the end, and “eins” stands for “ein Exemplar”; the pronoun keeps the neuter ending -s. Many public libraries let you renew online through your account (Konto).

Other ways to say it

“Kann ich das Buch noch einmal verlängern?” – The everyday short form; libraries understand that you mean the loan.

“Kann ich das Buch vormerken lassen, wenn ich es zurückgebe?” – Asks to reserve it again for later; useful when renewal is refused.

Examples

  • Kann ich die Leihfrist dieses Buches verlängern? Can I extend this book’s loan period?
  • Leider ist es bereits vorgemerkt.Unfortunately, it is already reserved.
  • Bis wann muss ich es zurückbringen?By when do I have to return it?
  • Das genaue Datum steht in Ihrem Konto. The exact date is in your account.
  • Gibt es ein anderes Exemplar? Is there another copy?
  • Ich prüfe, ob eine andere Zweigstelle eins hat.I will check whether another branch has one.

Watch out

“Ich prüfe, ob eine andere Zweigstelle hat eins.” → “Ich prüfe, ob eine andere Zweigstelle eins hat.”: Ob introduces a subordinate clause, and in German subordinate clauses the conjugated verb goes to the very end.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can I extend this book’s loan period?

    Show answer or example answer

Kann ich die Leihfrist dieses Buches verlängern?

“Kann” starts the question; “die Leihfrist dieses Buches” is the object with a genitive attached, and “verlängern” closes as infinitive.

  2. Put the words in order: Bis / es / ich / muss / wann / zurückbringen

    Show answer or example answer

Bis wann muss ich es zurückbringen?

“Bis wann” asks for a deadline; the modal “muss” is second and the separable infinitive “zurückbringen” closes the question.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will check whether another branch has one.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich prüfe, ob eine andere Zweigstelle eins hat.

The main clause “Ich prüfe” is followed by an ob-clause with the verb “hat” at the end; “eins” replaces ein Exemplar.

Use it today

Log in to a library account or imagine one, then write what you would say at the desk if your renewal was refused: ask the deadline and about another copy.
