The idea

“Unsicher bei etwas sein” means to be unsure about something; bei takes the dative (bei dieser Abkürzung). The question for abbreviations is “Wofür steht …?” or “Was heißt …?”, using a wo-compound because stehen für needs für. Noch einmal means once more. Anschließend means afterwards. Repeating your understanding back is a normal and respected way to check information in German.

Other ways to say it

“Wofür steht diese Abkürzung?” – Neutral, precise question about one abbreviation.

“Habe ich das richtig verstanden: zweimal am Tag?” – Checks your understanding by repeating the key point.

Examples

  • Könnten Sie die Beschriftung noch einmal erklären?Could you explain the label again?
  • Welche Angabe haben Sie nicht verstanden?Which information did you not understand?
  • Ich bin bei dieser Abkürzung unsicher.I am unsure about this abbreviation.
  • Ich erkläre Ihnen, wofür sie steht.I will explain what it stands for.
  • Darf ich anschließend mein Verständnis wiederholen?May I then repeat my understanding?
  • Ja, so können wir Missverständnisse klären.Yes, that way we can clarify misunderstandings.

Watch out

“Was steht diese Abkürzung für?” → “Wofür steht diese Abkürzung?”: Copying English “What does it stand for?” leaves für dangling at the end. German joins wo and für into wofür at the start of the question.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you explain the label again?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten Sie die Beschriftung noch einmal erklären?

Polite Konjunktiv II “Könnten Sie”; “noch einmal” asks for a repeat, and “erklären” stands at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: Abkürzung / bei / bin / dieser / Ich / unsicher

    Show answer or example answer

Ich bin bei dieser Abkürzung unsicher.

“Unsicher” is an adjective after bin; “bei dieser Abkürzung” is dative and names the exact problem.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Yes, that way we can clarify misunderstandings.

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, so können wir Missverständnisse klären.

“So” means in this way; Missverständnisse klären is a common pair meaning to clear up misunderstandings.
