The idea

Print vocabulary: beidseitig/doppelseitig (double-sided), einseitig (single-sided), farbig (colour), schwarz-weiß (black and white, written with a hyphen), das Exemplar (copy), heften (staple), binden (bind). “Jeweils” means each: “jeweils einzeln geheftet”. With Sie, a polite instruction starts with bitte plus the imperative: “Bitte drucken Sie …”.

Other ways to say it

“Ich hätte gern zwei Ausdrucke, doppelseitig und geheftet.” – Polite order formula with Konjunktiv II; all details in one sentence.

“Nur das Deckblatt bitte in Farbe.” – Short instruction; Deckblatt is the cover page.

Watch out

“Die anderen Seiten können schwarz und weiß sein.” → “Die anderen Seiten können schwarz-weiß sein.”: German treats black and white printing as one compound adjective, schwarz-weiß. “Schwarz und weiß” sounds like two separate colours.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Please print this file double-sided.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte drucken Sie diese Datei beidseitig.

“Bitte” plus the Sie-imperative “drucken Sie” is polite; “diese Datei” is accusative, and “beidseitig” describes how.

  2. Put the words in order: anderen / die / Ja / können / schwarz-weiß / sein / Seiten

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, die anderen Seiten können schwarz-weiß sein.

“Ja” confirms; “die anderen Seiten” is the plural subject, and “können … sein” allows black and white.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will show you a test print first.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich zeige Ihnen vorher einen Probedruck.

“Zeigen” takes the dative “Ihnen” and accusative “einen Probedruck”; “vorher” means before the full print.
