The idea

Abfahren is separable: in a main clause the prefix ab goes to the end, “Wo fährt der Ersatzbus ab?”. The prepositions vor and hinter take the dative when they describe a location: vor dem Rathaus, hinter dem Rathaus. Liegen describes where a fixed place is: “Der Ersatzhalt liegt am Rathausplatz.” Ersatz- in compounds means “replacement”: Ersatzbus, Ersatzhalt, Ersatzverkehr.

Other ways to say it

“Wo hält der Schienenersatzverkehr?” – Uses the official term; staff will recognise it at once.

“Entschuldigung, wissen Sie, wo die Busse für die gesperrte Strecke fahren?” – Polite and indirect, good for asking passers-by.

Examples

  • Wo fährt der Ersatzbus ab?Where does the replacement bus depart?
  • Der Ersatzhalt liegt am Rathausplatz. The replacement stop is at the town hall square.
  • Ist das vor oder hinter dem Rathaus? Is that in front of or behind the town hall?
  • Auf der Seite mit dem Brunnen. On the side with the fountain.
  • Steht dort die gleiche Liniennummer?Does it show the same route number there?

Watch out

“Wo abfährt der Ersatzbus?” → “Wo fährt der Ersatzbus ab?”: In a main clause or direct question the separable prefix ab splits off and goes to the end; only fährt stays in second position.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Where does the replacement bus depart?

    Show answer or example answer

    Wo fährt der Ersatzbus ab?

The W-question puts “Wo” first, “fährt” second and the separable prefix “ab” at the end, framing the subject “der Ersatzbus”.

  2. Put the words in order: das / dem / hinter / Ist / oder / Rathaus / vor

    Show answer or example answer

Ist das vor oder hinter dem Rathaus?

“Vor oder hinter dem Rathaus” shares one article: both prepositions need the dative here because they describe a position.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please compare the replacement-service notice.

    Show answer or example answer

    Vergleichen Sie bitte den Ersatzverkehrshinweis.

“Vergleichen Sie” is a polite imperative; the long compound Ersatzverkehrshinweis joins Ersatzverkehr and Hinweis with a linking -s-.
