The idea
Fehlen works the other way round from English “to miss”: the missing thing is the subject and the person is dative: Mir fehlt die Beilage. Die bestellte Beilage uses the participle bestellt as an adjective. Zu + dative links a side to a dish: zu diesem Gemüsegericht. Nachschauen nach (to check on) and unterwegs sein (to be on the way) are typical replies.
Other ways to say it
“Entschuldigung, die Kartoffeln haben wir noch nicht bekommen.” – Polite and simple; puts the item first for emphasis.
“Kommt die Beilage noch?” – Short, friendly question; suits a relaxed setting.
Examples
- Die bestellte Beilage fehlt noch auf dem Tisch. The side dish we ordered is still missing from the table.
- Welche Beilage haben Sie bestellt?Which side dish did you order?
- Die Ofenkartoffeln zu diesem Gemüsegericht. The baked potatoes with this vegetable dish.
- Ich schaue sofort nach der Bestellung.I will check the order straight away.
- Vielleicht kommt sie einfach separat.Perhaps it is simply coming separately.
- Ich kläre, ob sie bereits unterwegs ist.I will find out whether it is already on its way.

Watch out
“Die Beilage fehlt mich noch.” → “Die Beilage fehlt mir noch.”: With fehlen, the person who lacks something is in the dative: mir, dir, uns. The accusative mich is a frequent error because English uses “me” for both.

Show answer or example answer
Die bestellte Beilage fehlt noch auf dem Tisch.
Die bestellte Beilage is the subject; bestellte is a participle adjective. Fehlt noch says it has not come yet, and auf dem Tisch is dative.
Put the words in order: Die / diesem / Gemüsegericht / Ofenkartoffeln / zu
Show answer or example answer
Die Ofenkartoffeln zu diesem Gemüsegericht.
A verbless answer naming the side. Zu diesem Gemüsegericht (dative) connects the potatoes to the main dish.
Write this sentence in German: I will find out whether it is already on its way.
Show answer or example answer
Ich kläre, ob sie bereits unterwegs ist.
Kläre is the main verb. Ob sie bereits unterwegs ist is an indirect yes/no question, so ist moves to the end.
