The idea

Möchten + infinitive at the end is the standard polite wish: Wir möchten … zahlen. Zahlen and bezahlen both work; bezahlen takes a direct object: Ich bezahle das Wasser. Für mich (accusative) says whose dish it was. Sich etwas teilen means to share something: Den Kuchen teilen wir uns. Der Anteil (share) is masculine, so it becomes meinen Anteil in the accusative.

Other ways to say it

“Getrennt, bitte.” – The short answer to the server’s question Zusammen oder getrennt?

“Können wir bitte getrennt bezahlen?” – A question form that is just as polite and very common.

Examples

  • Wir möchten bitte getrennt zahlen. We would like to pay separately, please.
  • Wer hatte die Suppe und das Wasser?Who had the soup and the water?
  • Die Suppe war für mich. The soup was mine.
  • Ich bezahle das Wasser und die Pasta.I will pay for the water and the pasta.
  • Den Kuchen teilen wir uns zur Hälfte. We will split the cake equally.
  • Dann bezahle ich meinen Anteil mit Karte. Then I will pay my share by card.

Watch out

“Dann bezahle ich mein Anteil mit Karte.” → “Dann bezahle ich meinen Anteil mit Karte.”: Anteil is masculine (der Anteil). As the direct object of bezahlen it is accusative, and masculine possessives add -en: meinen.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: We would like to pay separately, please.

    Show answer or example answer

    Wir möchten bitte getrennt zahlen.

Möchten is the conjugated verb in second position, bitte softens the wish, and zahlen ends the sentence as the infinitive. Getrennt describes how.

  2. Put the words in order: Die / für / mich / Suppe / war

    Show answer or example answer

    Die Suppe war für mich.

War is the past of sein. Für mich takes the accusative and simply says the soup was your order.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will pay my share by card.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann bezahle ich meinen Anteil mit Karte.

Dann starts the sentence, so bezahle comes before ich. Meinen Anteil is accusative masculine, and mit Karte names the payment method.
