The idea

Wäre + möglich is a common polite request without a verb of action. Weiter weg von + dative means farther from. Ein paar (lower case) means a few; ein Paar (capital) is a pair. Sobald introduces a clause with the verb last: sobald wir wechseln können. Jemandem Bescheid geben (to tell someone when something is ready) takes a dative person.

Other ways to say it

“Könnten wir uns vielleicht an einen anderen Tisch setzen?” – Polite and slightly more general.

“Ist der Tisch am Fenster noch frei?” – Asks for a specific table you can see.

Examples

  • Wäre ein Tisch weiter weg von der Tür möglich?Would a table farther from the door be possible?
  • Dort hinten könnte gleich etwas frei werden.Something farther back may become available soon.
  • Wir können ein paar Minuten warten. We can wait a few minutes.
  • Bitte nehmen Sie noch nichts selbst mit. Please do not move anything yourselves yet.
  • Sagen Sie uns, sobald wir wechseln können.Let us know as soon as we can move.
  • Ich gebe Ihnen dann direkt Bescheid.I will let you know directly then.

Watch out

“Wir können ein Paar Minuten warten.” → “Wir können ein paar Minuten warten.”: Lower-case ein paar means a few. Capitalised ein Paar is a noun meaning a pair, so ein Paar Minuten would mean exactly two minutes as a set.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Would a table farther from the door be possible?

    Show answer or example answer

Wäre ein Tisch weiter weg von der Tür möglich?

Wäre opens the question in Konjunktiv II. Ein Tisch is the subject, weiter weg von der Tür describes the place, and möglich ends the sentence.

  2. Put the words in order: ein / können / Minuten / paar / warten / Wir

    Show answer or example answer

Wir können ein paar Minuten warten.

Können is the modal, warten the infinitive at the end. Ein paar Minuten is an accusative time expression.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will let you know directly then.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich gebe Ihnen dann direkt Bescheid.

Gebe … Bescheid comes from the fixed phrase Bescheid geben. Ihnen is dative, dann refers to when the table is free, and direkt means straight away.
