The idea

The pluperfect is hatte/war + past participle and marks an earlier past: Ich hatte … bestellt. Verbs with the prefixes be-, ver-, er- form the participle without ge-: bestellt, verglichen. Ausdrücklich means explicitly. Ausgeben in restaurants means to serve out. Mir geht es um … means my point is …. Wie introduces an indirect question with the verb last.

Other ways to say it

“Entschuldigung, ich hatte die kalte Variante bestellt.” – Polite and specific; Variante means version.

“Das ist leider nicht das, was ich bestellt habe.” – General wording for any wrong dish.

Examples

  • Ich hatte das Gericht ausdrücklich kalt bestellt.I specifically ordered the dish cold.
  • Entschuldigung, es wurde warm ausgegeben.Sorry; it was served warm.
  • Können wir die Bestellung kurz vergleichen? Can we briefly compare the order?
  • Ja, ich sehe auf dem Bon nach.Yes, I will check the order slip.
  • Mir geht es um die bestellte Variante.I mean the version I ordered.
  • Dann klären wir, wie wir das korrigieren können. Then let us clarify how we can correct it.

Watch out

“Ich hatte das Gericht ausdrücklich kalt gebestellt.” → “Ich hatte das Gericht ausdrücklich kalt bestellt.”: Verbs with an unstressed prefix such as be- do not add ge- in the participle. So it is bestellt, as in bezahlt and bekommen.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I specifically ordered the dish cold.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich hatte das Gericht ausdrücklich kalt bestellt.

Hatte … bestellt is pluperfect: the order came before the wrong dish. Ausdrücklich kalt stresses that cold was clearly requested.

  2. Put the words in order: Bestellung / die / Können / kurz / vergleichen / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Können wir die Bestellung kurz vergleichen?

Können wir suggests a joint step. Kurz keeps it light, and vergleichen ends the sentence as the infinitive.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us clarify how we can correct it.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann klären wir, wie wir das korrigieren können.

Klären wir follows dann. Wie wir das korrigieren können is an indirect question, so können is last after the infinitive.
