Ask whether a copy or original is requested in German

The idea

Gemeint sein is a state passive: Was ist gemeint? Unterscheiden zwischen + dative means to distinguish between. Die zuständige Stelle is the office responsible. Sich etwas erklären lassen means to have something explained to you; lassen takes a bare infinitive without zu. Eine beglaubigte Kopie is a certified copy.

Other ways to say it

“Reicht eine einfache Kopie, oder brauchen Sie das Original?” – Direct question, common on the phone.

“Muss die Kopie beglaubigt sein?” – Asks specifically whether certification is needed.

Watch out

“Lassen Sie sich die Anforderung genau zu erklären.” → “Lassen Sie sich die Anforderung genau erklären.”: Lassen works like a modal verb and takes a plain infinitive. Adding zu is a common error because many other verbs, such as versuchen, need it.
