The idea

With fehlen the missing thing is the nominative subject: der Anhang fehlt. Genannt (mentioned) is the participle of nennen used as an adjective. Eigentlich here means actual, the message itself. Erneut senden means to resend. So at the start of a sentence means in this way: So können Sie … erkennen.

Other ways to say it

“Leider ist an Ihrer E-Mail kein Anhang dabei.” – Friendly and simple; suits most emails.

“Könnten Sie mir die Datei bitte noch einmal schicken?” – A polite request to resend.

Examples

  • In Ihrer Nachricht fehlt der genannte Anhang. The attachment mentioned is missing from your message.
  • Wird Ihnen gar keine Datei angezeigt? Is no file displayed at all?
  • Ich sehe nur den eigentlichen Nachrichtentext.I can only see the message text itself.
  • Dann sende ich die Datei erneut. Then I will send the file again.
  • Bitte nennen Sie auch den erwarteten Dateinamen. Please also state the expected file name.
  • So können Sie den richtigen Anhang erkennen. That way you can recognize the correct attachment.

Watch out

“In Ihrer Nachricht fehlt den genannten Anhang.” → “In Ihrer Nachricht fehlt der genannte Anhang.”: The missing item is the subject of fehlen, so it stays in the nominative: der genannte Anhang. Learners often treat it as an object because English uses “I am missing the attachment”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The attachment mentioned is missing from your message.

    Show answer or example answer

In Ihrer Nachricht fehlt der genannte Anhang.

In Ihrer Nachricht (dative) opens the sentence. Fehlt is second, and der genannte Anhang is the nominative subject at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: den / eigentlichen / Ich / Nachrichtentext / nur / sehe

    Show answer or example answer

Ich sehe nur den eigentlichen Nachrichtentext.

Sehe nur limits what is visible. Den eigentlichen Nachrichtentext is accusative masculine with a weak adjective ending -en.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That way you can recognize the correct attachment.
