The idea

“Es liegt an” plus dative names the cause: “Es liegt am Router”, “nicht an meinem Laptop”. Seit with the present tense describes a state that is still going on: “Seit zehn Minuten lädt nichts.” Keine negates a noun without an article: “keine genaue Dauer”. “Auch nicht” combines also and not; in English it becomes either. Questions about a reading or notice often use stehen: “Was steht dort?”

Other ways to say it

“Hast du auch gerade kein WLAN?” – Very casual; WLAN is the usual German word for Wi-Fi.

“Bei mir ist das Internet seit einer Viertelstunde weg.” – Describes your own situation first; neutral.

Examples

  • Funktioniert dein Internet gerade auch nicht? Is your internet not working at the moment either?
  • Bei mir lädt seit zehn Minuten nichts.Nothing has loaded for me for ten minutes.
  • Dann liegt es vielleicht nicht an meinem Laptop. Then perhaps the problem is not my laptop.
  • Hast du schon die Störungsmeldung gelesen?Have you already read the service interruption message?
  • Nein, kannst du mir sagen, was dort steht? No; can you tell me what it says?
  • Dort steht noch keine genaue Dauer. It does not give an exact duration yet.

Watch out

“Dann liegt es vielleicht nicht bei meinem Laptop.” → “Dann liegt es vielleicht nicht an meinem Laptop.”: To name a cause, German uses liegen an plus dative. Liegen bei means something is someone’s responsibility or decision, which is a different idea.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is your internet not working at the moment either?

    Show answer or example answer

Funktioniert dein Internet gerade auch nicht?

The verb “Funktioniert” opens the question; “gerade auch nicht” combines now, also and the negation in natural order.

  2. Put the words in order: an / Dann / es / Laptop / liegt / meinem / nicht / vielleicht

    Show answer or example answer

Dann liegt es vielleicht nicht an meinem Laptop.

“Dann” opens the sentence; “es liegt an” names the cause, and “nicht” stands before “an meinem Laptop” to exclude that cause.

  3. Write this sentence in German: It does not give an exact duration yet.

    Show answer or example answer

Dort steht noch keine genaue Dauer.

“Dort steht” reports what a notice says; “keine genaue Dauer” negates the noun phrase with kein.

Use it today

Write a message to a neighbour asking whether their internet works, saying since when yours is down and whether you have found an outage notice.
