The idea

Laufen is the usual verb for a machine or programme that is running: Die Wäsche läuft, das Programm läuft noch. Dauern gives the remaining time: Das Programm dauert noch zwanzig Minuten. Danach (afterwards) can stand alone or in phrases such as für danach. Sich eintragen (to sign up) is reflexive and separable: Ich trage mich ein. Neighbours sharing a laundry room often use du, but Sie is fine if you do not know them.

Other ways to say it

“Bist du bald fertig mit der Maschine?” – Casual and direct; fine between neighbours who know each other.

“Brauchen Sie die Maschine danach noch?” – Polite Sie-form that checks whether they need another load.

Examples

  • Wie lange läuft deine Wäsche noch? How much longer will your wash run?
  • Das Programm dauert noch zwanzig Minuten. The programme will take another twenty minutes.
  • Kann ich die Maschine danach benutzen? Can I use the machine afterwards?
  • Ja, ich nehme die Wäsche sofort heraus.Yes, I will take the washing out straight away.
  • Ich brauche nur einen kurzen Waschgang.I only need a short wash cycle.
  • Dann trage ich mich für danach ein. Then I will put my name down for afterwards.

Watch out

“Dann ich trage mich für danach ein.” → “Dann trage ich mich für danach ein.”: When an adverb such as dann opens a main clause, the conjugated verb must stay in second position, so the subject ich moves behind it. English word order (then I sign) does not work here.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: How much longer will your wash run?

    Show answer or example answer

Wie lange läuft deine Wäsche noch?

Wie lange asks about duration, laufen describes the running machine, and noch at the end limits the question to the time that is left.

  2. Put the words in order: benutzen / danach / die / ich / Kann / Maschine

    Show answer or example answer

Kann ich die Maschine danach benutzen?

A yes/no question puts the modal kann first. Benutzen is the infinitive at the end, and danach places your turn right after theirs.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will put my name down for afterwards.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann trage ich mich für danach ein.

Trage … ein is the separable verb sich eintragen. Mich is the reflexive pronoun, and für danach is a compact way to say for the slot afterwards.

Use it today

Imagine the washing machine in your building is busy. Ask the neighbour how long it will take and arrange to use it next.
