The idea

“Frei sein für” plus accusative says who may use something. “Gelten für” describes when a rule applies: “Der Hinweis gilt nur für das Wochenende.” “Eingetragen sein” is a state passive: someone is listed. “Jemandem etwas wegnehmen” takes a dative person: “niemandem den Platz wegnehmen”. “Warten auf” takes the accusative, and bevor sends the verb to the end of its clause.

Other ways to say it

“Darf mein Besuch heute hier parken?” – A simple, neutral question asking for permission.

“Wen kann ich wegen des Besucherparkplatzes fragen?” – Asks for the responsible person; genitive after wegen.

Examples

  • Ist dieser Stellplatz heute für Besucher frei?Is this parking space available for visitors today?
  • Der Hinweis gilt nur für das Wochenende. The notice only applies to the weekend.
  • Heute ist aber schon jemand eingetragen. But someone is already listed for today.
  • Dann fragen wir erst die zuständige Person. Then we will ask the person responsible first.
  • Ich möchte niemandem den Platz wegnehmen.I do not want to take someone else’s space.
  • Wir warten auf die Bestätigung, bevor wir parken. We will wait for confirmation before parking.

Watch out

“Wir warten für die Bestätigung, bevor wir parken.” → “Wir warten auf die Bestätigung, bevor wir parken.”: English “wait for” tempts learners to use für. German warten always takes auf plus accusative for what you are waiting for.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is this parking space available for visitors today?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist dieser Stellplatz heute für Besucher frei?

“Ist” opens the question; “dieser Stellplatz” is the subject, “heute” the time, and “für Besucher frei” says for whom it is available.

  2. Put the words in order: aber / eingetragen / Heute / ist / jemand / schon

    Show answer or example answer

Heute ist aber schon jemand eingetragen.

“Heute” opens the sentence, “ist” is second; “aber” marks the contrast, and “eingetragen” is a state passive participle.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will wait for confirmation before parking.

    Show answer or example answer

Wir warten auf die Bestätigung, bevor wir parken.

“Warten auf” takes the accusative “die Bestätigung”; in the bevor-clause the verb “parken” goes to the end.
