The idea

Ownership uses gehören plus dative: “Die Kiste gehört mir/dir/ihr.” “Gehören zu” means to be part of a group (“Das gehört zum Fahrrad”), not to own. Colours are adjectives with endings: die blaue Kiste, einen weißen Deckel. “Umstellen” is separable: “Ich stelle sie nicht um.” “Wiederfinden” is also separable, so in a main clause “wieder” goes to the end: “Die Person findet ihre Sachen wieder.”

Other ways to say it

“Weißt du, wem die blaue Kiste gehört?” – Indirect question; good when the person probably is not the owner.

“Im Keller steht eine blaue Kiste ohne Namen. Gehört sie jemandem von euch?” – Ready-made message for a building group chat.

Examples

  • Gehört dir die blaue Kiste im Keller?Does the blue crate in the basement belong to you?
  • Nein, meine Kiste hat einen weißen Deckel. No, my crate has a white lid.
  • Dann frage ich noch in der Hausgruppe. Then I will also ask in the building group.
  • Bitte beschreibe auch den Aufkleber darauf. Please describe the sticker on it too.
  • Ich stelle sie bis dahin nicht um.I will not move it until then.
  • Gut, so findet die Person ihre Sachen wieder.Good; that way the person can find their things again.

Watch out

“Gehört die blaue Kiste zu dir?” → “Gehört dir die blaue Kiste?”: Gehören zu describes membership or being part of something. To ask about ownership, use gehören with a plain dative pronoun.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Does the blue crate in the basement belong to you?

    Show answer or example answer

Gehört dir die blaue Kiste im Keller?

The verb “Gehört” opens the question; the short dative “dir” comes before the longer subject “die blaue Kiste im Keller”.

  2. Put the words in order: Dann / der / frage / Hausgruppe / ich / in / noch

    Show answer or example answer

Dann frage ich noch in der Hausgruppe.

“Dann” starts the sentence, so “frage” is second; “noch” adds a further step, and “in der Hausgruppe” is dative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; that way the person can find their things again.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, so findet die Person ihre Sachen wieder.

“So” means in this way and takes first position; “findet … wieder” splits the separable verb wiederfinden.
