The idea

Konjunktiv II makes a plan sound tentative: wären (from sein), blieben (from bleiben; identical to the past tense in the plural, so “würden bleiben” is also common). “Für wie viele Personen” asks about group size. “Bis halb fünf” means until 4:30, because halb counts towards the next hour. “Sich überschneiden” (to overlap) is reflexive: “Die Termine überschneiden sich.”

Other ways to say it

“Ist die Terrasse am Sonntag noch frei?” – Short check of availability before giving details.

“Wir würden gern am Sonntag bis etwa vier Uhr draußen grillen.” – Polite and specific; names the activity and end time.

Examples

  • Können wir die Terrasse am Sonntag nutzen? Can we use the terrace on Sunday?
  • Für wie viele Personen plant ihr?How many people are you planning for?
  • Wir wären sechs und blieben bis nachmittags. There would be six of us and we would stay until the afternoon.
  • Ab fünf haben andere etwas geplant.Others have planned something from five.
  • Wir räumen bis halb fünf alles auf.We will tidy everything away by half past four.
  • Dann überschneiden sich die beiden Gruppen nicht. Then the two groups will not overlap.

Watch out

“Dann überschneiden die beiden Gruppen nicht.” → “Dann überschneiden sich die beiden Gruppen nicht.”: Überschneiden in the sense of to overlap is reflexive when the things overlap with each other. Without sich, the sentence has no object and sounds broken.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can we use the terrace on Sunday?

    Show answer or example answer

Können wir die Terrasse am Sonntag nutzen?

“Können wir” asks for permission for the group; “die Terrasse” is the accusative object and “am Sonntag” the time.

  2. Put the words in order: bis / blieben / nachmittags / sechs / und / wären / Wir

    Show answer or example answer

Wir wären sechs und blieben bis nachmittags.

“Wären” and “blieben” are both Konjunktiv II, so the plan sounds open; “bis nachmittags” gives the end of the stay.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then the two groups will not overlap.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann überschneiden sich die beiden Gruppen nicht.

“Dann” opens the sentence; the reflexive “sich” follows the verb, and “nicht” at the end negates the overlap.
