The idea

Equal comparison uses so plus adjective plus wie: so dunkel wie. Unequal comparison uses the comparative plus als: dunkler als. Colour names become neuter nouns: das Blau, ein helles Blau. Compound colours are written as one word: dunkelblau, hellgrün. “Eher” means rather or more: “eher hell als dunkel”. “Danebenhalten” (to hold next to) is separable and stays whole after dürfen.

Other ways to say it

“Haben Sie das auch in einem helleren Blau?” – Asks for an alternative shade; comparative helleren with dative ending.

“Gibt es irgendwo ein Muster zum Anschauen?” – Asks for a sample in general; useful for paint or fabric.

Watch out

“Ist der Inhalt wirklich so dunkel als auf dem Bild?” → “Ist der Inhalt wirklich so dunkel wie auf dem Bild?”: With so plus adjective, German uses wie for equality. Als belongs only after a comparative such as dunkler.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Are the contents really as dark as in the picture?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist der Inhalt wirklich so dunkel wie auf dem Bild?

“Ist” opens the question; “so dunkel wie auf dem Bild” compares the real product with the photo as equals.

  2. Put the words in order: Blau / eher / ein / helles / Ich / suche

    Show answer or example answer

Ich suche eher ein helles Blau.

“Eher” softens and narrows the wish; “ein helles Blau” uses the colour as a neuter noun with the adjective ending -es.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Yes, you can see the difference here.

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, hier können Sie den Unterschied sehen.

“Hier” is a place word; “können Sie” follows, and “den Unterschied” is the accusative object of “sehen”.
