The idea

“Kann man …?” asks in general whether something is possible. “Auffallen” (to be noticed) takes a dative person and forms the perfect with sein: “Mir ist die Macke aufgefallen.” The thing noticed is the subject. “Sich etwas ansehen” means to look at something closely; in speech the reflexive mir is sometimes dropped. “Ansprechen” means to raise or mention a point: “Sprechen Sie diese Stelle direkt an.”

Other ways to say it

“Verkaufen Sie das Ausstellungsstück auch?” – Direct question to staff; neutral.

“Gibt es auf das Ausstellungsstück einen Nachlass?” – Asks about a discount; Nachlass means price reduction.

Watch out

“Ich habe die kleine Macke an der Ecke aufgefallen.” → “Mir ist die kleine Macke an der Ecke aufgefallen.”: Auffallen works the other way round from English notice: the thing is the subject, the person is dative, and the auxiliary is sein. For an active verb, use bemerken: “Ich habe die Macke bemerkt.”

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can this display item be bought?

    Show answer or example answer

    Kann man dieses Ausstellungsstück kaufen?

“Kann man” asks generally; the object “dieses Ausstellungsstück” is neuter accusative, and “kaufen” closes the question.

  2. Put the words in order: ansehen / es / genauer / ich / Könnte / vorher

    Show answer or example answer

Könnte ich es vorher genauer ansehen?

“Könnte” is the polite Konjunktiv II; “es” is the item, “vorher genauer” adds time and degree, and “ansehen” ends the sentence.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please point out that spot directly.

    Show answer or example answer

Sprechen Sie diese Stelle bitte direkt an.

The Sie-imperative splits ansprechen: “Sprechen Sie … an”, with the object “diese Stelle” and “bitte direkt” inside.
