The idea

For words and signs, German uses bedeuten, not meinen: “Was bedeutet das?” Meinen is for what a person means. “Zur Ansicht” is zu + der Ansicht: for viewing. “Dienen als” means to serve as: “Das Stück dient als Muster.” “Mir ist wichtig, dass …” puts the verb at the end of the dass-clause. Übereinstimmen (to match) is separable but stays whole there.

Other ways to say it

“Kann ich das hier kaufen, oder ist es nur ein Muster?” – Asks both options at once; neutral.

“Wie lange dauert es, wenn ich das Modell bestelle?” – A useful follow-up question about the delivery time.

Examples

  • Was bedeutet hier nur zur Ansicht? What does “for display only” mean here?
  • Dieses Stück dient als Muster. This item serves as a sample.
  • Kann ich trotzdem ein gleiches Modell bestellen? Can I still order the same model?
  • Dazu frage ich die zuständige Abteilung.I will ask the relevant department about that.
  • Mir ist wichtig, dass die Farbe übereinstimmt. It is important to me that the color matches.
  • Dann vergleichen wir die genaue Modellbezeichnung. Then we will compare the exact model designation.

Watch out

“Was meint hier nur zur Ansicht?” → “Was bedeutet hier nur zur Ansicht?”: English “mean” covers both, but German meinen needs a person as subject. A word, label or sign bedeutet something.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: What does “for display only” mean here?

    Show answer or example answer

Was bedeutet hier nur zur Ansicht?

“Was bedeutet” asks for meaning; the quoted label “nur zur Ansicht” is the subject, with zur = zu der.

  2. Put the words in order: bestellen / ein / gleiches / ich / Kann / Modell / trotzdem

    Show answer or example answer

Kann ich trotzdem ein gleiches Modell bestellen?

“Trotzdem” means despite the sign; “ein gleiches Modell” is accusative, and “bestellen” closes the question after the modal “kann”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we will compare the exact model designation.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann vergleichen wir die genaue Modellbezeichnung.

“Dann vergleichen wir” suggests a step; “die genaue Modellbezeichnung” is the accusative object.
