The idea

“Laufen auf” plus accusative means to be registered in someone’s name: “Der Vertrag läuft auf mich.” “Die Angabe” is a piece of information you state; in the plural, Angaben means details. “Dabeihaben” means to have something with you. In “Dann klären wir kurz, was für die Abholung nötig ist”, the was-clause puts “ist” at the end.

Other ways to say it

“Reicht Ihnen die Bestellnummer auf dem Handy?” – Checks whether a digital proof is enough.

“Ich hole die Bestellung für meine Partnerin ab.” – Explains at once that you are collecting for someone else.

Examples

  • Welche Angabe brauchen Sie für meine Abholung? What information do you need for my collection?
  • Haben Sie die Abholnachricht dabei?Do you have the collection message with you?
  • Ja, hier steht eine Bestellnummer.Yes, there is an order number here.
  • Bitte zeigen Sie mir diese Nummer. Please show me that number.
  • Die Bestellung läuft auf meine Partnerin. The order is in my partner’s name.
  • Dann klären wir kurz, was für die Abholung nötig ist. Then let us clarify what is required for collection.

Watch out

“Die Bestellung ist auf meiner Partnerin.” → “Die Bestellung läuft auf meine Partnerin.”: German uses laufen auf with the accusative for whose name something is registered under. A literal “ist auf” with the dative does not carry that meaning.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: What information do you need for my collection?

    Show answer or example answer

Welche Angabe brauchen Sie für meine Abholung?

“Welche Angabe” is the accusative object question; “brauchen Sie” follows, and “für meine Abholung” names the purpose.

  2. Put the words in order: Bestellnummer / eine / hier / Ja / steht

    Show answer or example answer

    Ja, hier steht eine Bestellnummer.

“Hier” opens the sentence, so “steht” comes second; “eine Bestellnummer” is the subject.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us clarify what is required for collection.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann klären wir kurz, was für die Abholung nötig ist.

“Dann klären wir” proposes a joint step; the was-clause works as the object, with “nötig ist” at the end.
