The idea

Zurücklegen (to put aside) is separable and takes a dative person and an accusative item: jemandem etwas zurücklegen. “Bis heute Abend” uses heute plus a part of day with no article: heute Abend, morgen früh. Names for reservations follow “auf den Namen” or “unter dem Namen”; both are common. “Schaffen” in “Ich schaffe es gegen siebzehn Uhr” means to manage to make it.

Other ways to say it

“Können Sie den Mantel bis morgen für mich reservieren?” – Uses reservieren; slightly more formal and also common.

“Wie lange können Sie ihn mir zurücklegen?” – Asks about the shop’s time limit before you commit.

Examples

  • Könnten Sie mir diesen Mantel bis heute Abend zurücklegen?Could you set this coat aside for me until this evening?
  • Unter welchem Namen sollen wir ihn aufbewahren?Under what name should we hold it?
  • Bitte auf den Namen Özdemir.Under the name Özdemir, please.
  • Wann kommen Sie ungefähr wieder?Roughly when will you return?
  • Ich schaffe es gegen siebzehn Uhr.I can make it around five o’clock.
  • Dann notiere ich den Namen und die Uhrzeit. Then I will note the name and the time.

Watch out

“Könnten Sie mir diesen Mantel bis heute am Abend zurücklegen?” → “Könnten Sie mir diesen Mantel bis heute Abend zurücklegen?”: Heute, morgen and gestern combine directly with parts of the day: heute Abend, morgen Vormittag. Adding am is a typical learner error.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you set this coat aside for me until this evening?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten Sie mir diesen Mantel bis heute Abend zurücklegen?

“Könnten Sie” is very polite; dative “mir” comes before accusative “diesen Mantel”, and “zurücklegen” stays whole at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: auf / Bitte / den / Namen / Özdemir

    Show answer or example answer

    Bitte auf den Namen Özdemir.

A short answer without a verb; “auf den Namen” is accusative and introduces the name, a common reservation formula.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will note the name and the time.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann notiere ich den Namen und die Uhrzeit.

“Dann” opens the sentence; “notiere” takes two accusative objects joined by “und”: den Namen and die Uhrzeit.
