The idea

Stören takes the accusative: “Stört es Sie?”, “Stört dich das?”. The wenn-clause puts the verb at the end, and the separable verb herunterziehen stays joined there: “wenn ich das Rollo herunterziehe”. Das Rollo is neuter, so the pronoun is es. Blenden also takes the accusative (“blendet mich”). “Könnten wir …?” suggests a shared solution rather than a demand.

Other ways to say it

“Darf ich das Rollo ein Stück herunterlassen?” – Direct request for permission, slightly more neutral.

“Macht es Ihnen etwas aus, wenn ich die Jalousie schließe?” – Very polite; ausmachen + dative. Jalousie is also common for blinds.

Examples

  • Stört es Sie, wenn ich das Rollo herunterziehe?Would it bother you if I lowered the blind?
  • Ich schaue gerade noch nach draußen.I am still looking outside at the moment.
  • Die Sonne blendet mich beim Lesen. The sun is dazzling me while I read.
  • Könnten wir es nur halb schließen?Could we close it only halfway?
  • Ja, so kommt noch genug Licht herein.Yes, that still lets enough light in.
  • Dann lassen wir es in dieser Position. Then let us leave it in this position.

Watch out

“Stört es Ihnen, wenn ich das Rollo herunterziehe?” → “Stört es Sie, wenn ich das Rollo herunterziehe?”: Stören takes an accusative object, so the polite form is Sie, not Ihnen. Learners often confuse it with ausmachen, which does take the dative: „Macht es Ihnen etwas aus?“

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Would it bother you if I lowered the blind?

    Show answer or example answer

Stört es Sie, wenn ich das Rollo herunterziehe?

“Stört es Sie” asks politely; es points forward to the wenn-clause, where “herunterziehe” stands at the end in one piece.

  2. Put the words in order: beim / blendet / Die / Lesen / mich / Sonne

    Show answer or example answer

Die Sonne blendet mich beim Lesen.

“Die Sonne” is the subject, “mich” the accusative object of blenden; “beim Lesen” says when it happens.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us leave it in this position.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann lassen wir es in dieser Position.

“Dann” opens the sentence, so “lassen” comes second; “in dieser Position” is dative because it describes where the blind stays.

Use it today

Think of something shared on a train or in an office, such as a window, a light or the heating, and ask in German with “Stört es Sie, wenn …?”.
