The idea

Gehören zu + dative means to belong to a group or task: zu meiner Aufgabe. Gehören without zu (+ dative) means ownership: Das gehört mir. Weitergeben an + accusative means to pass on to someone, so the question word is an wen. “Es geht nur um …” limits a topic. Übernehmen means to take over. Volunteers here use du.

Other ways to say it

“Wer ist heute fürs Aufräumen zuständig?” – Neutral; asks who is responsible.

“Soll ich noch beim Abbau helfen, oder bin ich fertig?” – Casual; gives the coordinator two clear options.

Examples

  • Gehört das Aufräumen noch zu meiner Aufgabe? Is tidying up still part of my task?
  • Heute geht es nur um die Ausgabe.Today it is only about distribution.
  • An wen gebe ich übriges Material weiter? To whom do I pass remaining materials?
  • Die nächste Gruppe übernimmt die Kisten. The next group will take over the crates.
  • Dann stelle ich sie gesammelt hier ab.Then I will put them all down here together.
  • Bitte sag der Gruppe vorher Bescheid. Please let the group know beforehand.

Watch out

“Wem gebe ich übriges Material weiter?” → “An wen gebe ich übriges Material weiter?”: Weitergeben uses an + accusative for the receiver, so the question needs an wen. Wem fits plain geben (Wem gebe ich das?), but not weitergeben.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is tidying up still part of my task?

    Show answer or example answer

Gehört das Aufräumen noch zu meiner Aufgabe?

“Gehört … zu” plus dative “meiner Aufgabe”; “das Aufräumen” is a nominalised verb used as the subject.

  2. Put the words in order: An / gebe / ich / Material / übriges / weiter / wen

    Show answer or example answer

An wen gebe ich übriges Material weiter?

“An wen” asks for the receiver; weitergeben splits, “weiter” ends the sentence, and “übriges Material” has no article.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please let the group know beforehand.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte sag der Gruppe vorher Bescheid.

Du imperative “sag” of sagen; “der Gruppe” is dative with Bescheid sagen, and “vorher” means before.

Imagine a volunteer shift at a food bank or event. Write two questions that clarify where your task ends and who takes over afterwards.
