The idea

Neighbourhood groups and garden projects often use du or ihr, so write to the group with ihr. Give availability with “von … bis …” and duration with a plain accusative (“zwei Stunden helfen”). Preferences use “am liebsten” (most of all). Admitting a lack works with kein: “Eigene Werkzeuge habe ich noch nicht” puts the object first for emphasis. End with a question about what to bring and a friendly closing about the task assignment (Einteilung).

Other ways to say it

“Ich bin am Sonntagvormittag dabei.” – Short, casual yes; “dabei sein” means to take part.

“Für zwei Stunden könnt ihr fest mit mir rechnen.” – Neutral; “mit jemandem rechnen” means to count on someone.

Watch out

“Ich bin von zehn zu zwölf Uhr verfügbar.” → “Ich bin von zehn bis zwölf Uhr verfügbar.”: English “from … to …” tempts learners to use zu. For a time span German says von … bis …

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I can help for two hours at Sunday’s gardening session.

    Show answer or example answer

Beim Garteneinsatz am Sonntag kann ich zwei Stunden helfen.

“Beim Garteneinsatz am Sonntag” names the event and comes first, so “kann” is second. “Zwei Stunden” is an accusative of duration.

  2. Put the words in order: Am / Aufgabe / eine / ich / jemandem / liebsten / mit / übernehme / zusammen

    Show answer or example answer

Am liebsten übernehme ich eine Aufgabe zusammen mit jemandem.

“Am liebsten” is the superlative of gern and comes first for emphasis. “Zusammen mit jemandem” means together with someone, dative after mit.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I look forward to a brief reply about task allocation.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich freue mich auf eine kurze Rückmeldung zur Einteilung.

“Sich freuen auf” takes the accusative: “eine kurze Rückmeldung”. “Zur Einteilung” (zu + der) says what the reply should be about.
