The idea

Helfen + dative + zu-infinitive states a benefit (kann mir helfen, … kennenzulernen). Gleichzeitig introduces the limiting condition. A relative clause with a preposition (für die ich … Zeit habe) keeps the preposition in front of the pronoun. Wäre … wenn is a hypothetical warning. Deshalb links the argument to the practical consequence. Ending with später kann ich prüfen leaves room for growth, which keeps the tone positive.

Other ways to say it

“Ein Ehrenamt ist eine gute Möglichkeit, neue Leute kennenzulernen.” – Neutral general statement; Ehrenamt is the standard term.

“Lieber zwei Stunden im Monat zuverlässig als jede Woche mit schlechtem Gewissen.” – Casual, punchy comparison without a main verb.

Watch out

“Ich möchte nur Aufgaben übernehmen, die ich wirklich Zeit für habe.” → “Ich möchte nur Aufgaben übernehmen, für die ich wirklich Zeit habe.”: German does not leave prepositions at the end of a relative clause as English does (“tasks I have time for”). The preposition moves to the front: für die.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Volunteering can help me get to know people in my area.

    Show answer or example answer

Freiwillige Arbeit kann mir helfen, Menschen in meiner Umgebung kennenzulernen.

“Kann mir helfen” uses helfen with the dative mir. After the comma comes a zu-infinitive; kennenlernen is written as one word, so zu goes inside: “kennenzulernen”.

  2. Put the words in order: Eine / einhalten / große / hilfreich / ich / kann / nicht / sie / wäre / wenig / wenn / Zusage

    Show answer or example answer

Eine große Zusage wäre wenig hilfreich, wenn ich sie nicht einhalten kann.

“Wäre” (Konjunktiv II) makes the warning hypothetical. The wenn-clause ends with the modal “kann”; “sie” refers to die Zusage, and einhalten means to keep a promise.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Later I can check whether more responsibility is possible.

    Show answer or example answer

Später kann ich prüfen, ob mehr Verantwortung möglich ist.

“Später” fronts the time and puts “kann” second. The ob-clause ends with “möglich ist” and leaves the question of more responsibility open.
