The idea

Household or group messages use ihr. A swap request starts with a polite question to “jemand” (anyone), followed by an offer with “dafür” (in return). Practical reasons come next: “Deshalb lässt sich das Gericht noch frei auswählen” uses lassen sich for possibility. The request “Bitte meldet euch, bevor …” asks for replies first. Close with what you will do: “Den bestätigten Tausch trage ich anschließend ein.” Eintragen is separable.

Other ways to say it

“Tauscht jemand mit mir den Kochdienst am Freitag?” – Casual and direct; “tauschen mit” means to swap with someone.

“Hätte jemand Lust, Freitag für mich zu kochen? Ich übernehme dafür einen anderen Tag.” – Friendly; offers the trade in the same breath.

Könnte jemand meinen Kochdienst am Freitag übernehmen?

Ich kann dafür am Mittwoch oder Sonntag kochen.

Die Zutaten für Freitag sind noch nicht gekauft.

Deshalb lässt sich das Gericht noch frei auswählen.

Bitte meldet euch, bevor ich den Plan ändere.

Den bestätigten Tausch trage ich anschließend ein.

Watch out

“Ich kann dafür am Mittwoch oder am Sonntag kochen, wenn jemand übernimmt meinen Dienst.” → “Ich kann dafür am Mittwoch oder am Sonntag kochen, wenn jemand meinen Dienst übernimmt.”: In a wenn-clause the separable verb stays together and moves to the end: “übernimmt” comes after the object.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could someone take over my cooking duty on Friday?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnte jemand meinen Kochdienst am Freitag übernehmen?

“Könnte” starts the yes/no question; “jemand” is the subject and “meinen Kochdienst” the accusative object. “Übernehmen” stays whole at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: Die / Freitag / für / gekauft / nicht / noch / sind / Zutaten

    Show answer or example answer

Die Zutaten für Freitag sind noch nicht gekauft.

The passive participle “gekauft” with “sind” describes a state. “Noch nicht” shows that it can still change, which supports the request.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will then enter the confirmed swap.

    Show answer or example answer

Den bestätigten Tausch trage ich anschließend ein.

The object “Den bestätigten Tausch” comes first for emphasis; “trage” is second, and the prefix “ein” ends the sentence after “anschließend”.

Use it today

You cannot clean the kitchen on your assigned day. Write to your flatmates asking for a swap, offering two other days, and saying when you will update the plan.
