Use an indefinite article to introduce one unspecified thing, then a definite article when the listener can identify it.

The idea
Ein has no plural form. Unspecified plural nouns and general substance names can have no article; case and gender still determine any article that appears.
| Form / Muster | Beispiel / Gegensatz |
|---|---|
| neu | ein Hund / eine Lampe / ein Buch |
| bekannt | der Hund / die Lampe / das Buch |
| unbestimmter Plural | Bücher |
| Stoffname allgemein | Wasser |
Examples
- Ein Hund wartet vor der Tür.
- Der Hund trägt ein rotes Halsband.
- Ich kaufe eine Lampe.
- Die Lampe steht neben dem Sofa.
- Wir brauchen Brot.
- Auf dem Tisch liegen Bücher.

Watch out
There is no plural of ein. Use Bücher for unspecified books, and die Bücher when the reader or listener can identify which books you mean.
