Kein negates an indefinite noun phrase. Nicht can negate an adjective, a particular phrase or a statement. What you mean to deny matters.

The idea

Use kein where a positive sentence would usually have ein or no article: ein Auto becomes kein Auto; Milch becomes keine Milch. Its ending changes with gender, number and case. Use nicht with an adjective such as frisch, or before the element you contrast: nicht heute, sondern morgen. Whole-sentence negation also depends on sentence structure.

Examples

  • Das ist kein Bahnhof.
  • Ich habe keine Zeit.
  • Wir trinken keinen Kaffee.
  • Das Brot ist nicht frisch.
  • Ich komme heute nicht.
  • Sie wohnt nicht in Berlin.

Watch out

Do not put nicht in one fixed position in every sentence. Nicht heute contrasts the day; keinen Kaffee denies the coffee as an indefinite object.

Try it yourself

  1. Ich habe ___ Auto. (Verneinung: kein / nicht)

    Show answer or example answer

    kein

Auto is neuter and indefinite, so the negative form is kein Auto.

  2. Der Zug kommt ___ heute, sondern morgen.

    Show answer or example answer

    nicht

The contrast denies heute and replaces it with morgen, so use nicht.

  3. Wir brauchen ___ Milch. (Verneinung: keine / nicht)

    Show answer or example answer

    keine

Milch is feminine. Its accusative negative determiner is keine.

Use it today

Write a positive shopping list sentence, then negate it with kein. Add a contrast using nicht heute, sondern morgen.
