With another infinitive, a modal uses an infinitive instead of a participle: hat arbeiten müssen.
The idea
Use haben, even when the main verb alone takes sein: ist gefahren → hat fahren müssen.
| Feature | Form |
|---|---|
| Present | muss arbeiten |
| Simple past | musste arbeiten |
| Perfect | hat arbeiten müssen |
| Subordinate clause in the perfect | …, weil … hat arbeiten müssen |
| Without another infinitive | hat das nicht gewollt |
Review ordinary perfect tense to see exactly what the replacement infinitive changes. German Perfekt: haben, sein and past participles
Look more closely
Without another infinitive, a modal can keep its participle: Das habe ich nicht gewollt. This is a different pattern.
Convert Ich muss arbeiten into the perfect: Ich habe arbeiten müssen. Haben carries person and tense; arbeiten remains infinitive and müssen replaces gemusst. In the subordinate clause, haben moves before the pair: weil ich habe arbeiten müssen. The simpler past alternative is weil ich arbeiten musste.
Examples
- Ich habe länger arbeiten müssen.I had to work longer.
- Sie hat früh fahren müssen. She had to leave early.
- Wir haben nicht kommen können. We could not come.
- Er hat draußen warten dürfen. He was allowed to wait outside.
- Ich blieb, weil ich habe arbeiten müssen.I stayed because I had to work.
- Das habe ich nicht gewollt.I did not want that.
