Different time expressions use different prepositions, so learn clock times, days, seasons and durations as separate patterns.

The idea
Use um for clock times, am for days and im for months or seasons. Seit describes a continuing period, vor points backward and in plus a duration often points forward.
| Form / Muster | Beispiel / Gegensatz |
|---|---|
| Tag | am Montag |
| Uhrzeit | um acht Uhr |
| Monat / Jahreszeit | im Mai / im Winter |
| seit + Dauer | seit einem Jahr |
| in + Dauer | in einer Woche |
| vor + Dauer | vor einem Jahr |
Examples
- Am Dienstag habe ich frei.
- Der Zug fährt um acht Uhr.
- Im Winter wird es früh dunkel.
- Seit zwei Tagen regnet es.
- In einer Woche beginnt der Kurs.
- Vor einem Jahr war ich in Wien.

Watch out
Do not translate every time expression with one preposition. Compare um neun Uhr, am Montag and im Mai; seit einem Jahr describes a period continuing now.
