The German week runs from Montag to Sonntag. Learn each day with its meaning and a usable time expression, then distinguish a single appointment from a weekly habit: Am Montag arbeite ich zu Hause; montags means on Mondays.

The idea

Use am Montag to name Monday; the context can make it a single day or a routine. Montags explicitly means on Mondays, while nächsten Montag means next Monday without am.

Patterns to compare
German word / expressionMeaning and use

der MittwochWednesday — am Mittwoch (on Wednesday); mittwochs (on Wednesdays)
der DonnerstagThursday — am Donnerstag (on Thursday); donnerstags (on Thursdays)
der FreitagFriday — am Freitag (on Friday); freitags (on Fridays)

das Wochenende, die Wochenendenweekend — am Wochenende (at the weekend)

One appointment or every week?

Montags clearly means every Monday. Am Montag can refer to one Monday or to a regular activity; context decides. Diesen Montag means this Monday and nächsten Montag means next Monday: neither needs am. Sonnabend is another name for Samstag, especially in northern and central Germany. Compare morgen (tomorrow) with der Morgen (the morning): Morgen komme ich is about the next day.
