The idea

Many applicants wait two or three weeks before following up, though selection processes vary a lot. Keep the email to five or six sentences: enquiry, submission date with vor + dative, confirmation of receipt, offer of more information, question about timing, thanks. Vorliegen + dative (“liegt mir vor”) is formal German for having received something. The conditional “Falls …, wäre ein Hinweis hilfreich” asks without pressure. Use the job title and any reference number in the Betreff.

Other ways to say it

“Gibt es schon einen Zeitplan für die nächsten Schritte im Auswahlverfahren?” – Neutral question focused on the timeline.

“Ich bin weiterhin sehr an der Stelle interessiert und würde mich über ein Update freuen.” – Friendly and slightly less formal; restates your interest.

Watch out

“Die Unterlagen habe ich seit drei Wochen eingereicht.” → “Die Unterlagen habe ich vor drei Wochen eingereicht.”: Vor marks a point in the past (three weeks ago). Seit marks a duration that continues until now and does not fit a completed action like einreichen.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like to enquire about the status of my application.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich möchte mich nach dem Stand meiner Bewerbung erkundigen.

The reflexive “mich” stays right after the modal, and “erkundigen” ends the sentence. “Den Stand meiner Bewerbung” combines dative after nach with a genitive for whose status.

  2. Put the words in order: bereits / Eine / Eingangsbestätigung / liegt / mir / vor

    Show answer or example answer

Eine Eingangsbestätigung liegt mir bereits vor.

“Liegt mir … vor” means “I have it”; the person is in the dative. “Bereits” shows you already know the documents arrived, so you ask about status, not receipt.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thank you for your information on the current status.

    Show answer or example answer

Vielen Dank für Ihre Auskunft zum aktuellen Stand.

“Für Ihre Auskunft” uses für + accusative. “Zum aktuellen Stand” contracts zu dem and repeats the topic, closing the email in a rounded way.
