The idea

Such an apology message to a friend uses du and goes straight to the point: news first, then a short reason, then an acknowledgement and a question. “Erst” before a time means “not until”, unlike “nur”. The past perfect “wir hatten vereinbart” shows that the agreement came before the change. “Mir ist bewusst, dass …” is a polite way to admit you know you are late. Close with an open question so the lender can choose.

Other ways to say it

“Sorry, die Kamera bekommst du erst am Sonntag wieder.” – Very casual; suits a close friend in a chat.

“Es tut mir leid, ich schaffe es nicht vor Sonntag.” – Neutral apology with a clear limit.

Watch out

“Ich kann dir die Kamera nur am Sonntag zurückgeben.” → “Ich kann dir die Kamera erst am Sonntag zurückgeben.”: “Nur am Sonntag” means Sunday is the only possible day. To say “not before Sunday”, German uses erst.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Unfortunately, I can only return the camera to you on Sunday.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich kann dir die Kamera leider erst am Sonntag zurückgeben.

“Dir” is dative (to whom), “die Kamera” accusative (what). Pronoun before noun is the normal order, and “zurückgeben” stays whole at the end after the modal.

  2. Put the words in order: bewusst / dass / hatten / ist / Mir / Samstag / vereinbart / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Mir ist bewusst, dass wir Samstag vereinbart hatten.

“Mir ist bewusst” takes a dative person; in the dass-clause the verb cluster “vereinbart hatten” goes to the end, and the past perfect marks the earlier agreement.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please briefly tell me which solution suits you.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte sag mir kurz, welche Lösung für dich passt.

“Welche Lösung für dich passt” is an indirect question, so the verb “passt” moves to the end. “Kurz” softens the request into a quick reply.
