The idea

Write formally with Sie and a Betreff with your reference or file number. “Fragen nach + dative” asks about something. Give a short factual reason (“liegt mir noch nicht vor”: I do not have it yet). Offer partial submission to show good will. “Ob und wie” asks two questions at once. “Ich gehe … nicht von einer Änderung aus” (ausgehen von: to assume) makes clear you will not act on an extension you have not been granted.

Other ways to say it

“Wäre es möglich, die Unterlagen eine Woche später einzureichen?” – Polite Konjunktiv II with a concrete extra period.

“Ich bitte um eine Fristverlängerung bis zum 15. des Monats.” – Formal and direct; names the wished-for date.

Watch out

“Ich möchte für eine mögliche Verlängerung der Abgabefrist fragen.” → “Ich möchte nach einer möglichen Verlängerung der Abgabefrist fragen.”: English “ask for” leads to für. In German you ask about something with fragen nach + dative, or request it with bitten um.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like to ask about a possible extension of the submission deadline.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich möchte nach einer möglichen Verlängerung der Abgabefrist fragen.

“Nach einer möglichen Verlängerung” is dative after nach, so the adjective ends in -en. “Der Abgabefrist” is genitive: the deadline’s extension.

  2. Put the words in order: Angaben / bereits / Die / ich / kann / sofort / übermitteln / vollständigen

    Show answer or example answer

Die bereits vollständigen Angaben kann ich sofort übermitteln.

“Die bereits vollständigen Angaben” comes first for emphasis; “kann” is second. “Übermitteln” is a formal word for send.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I would appreciate a timely response to my enquiry.

    Show answer or example answer

Über eine zeitnahe Auskunft zu meiner Anfrage würde ich mich freuen.

“Würde … freuen” is Konjunktiv II, softer than “freue mich”. “Zeitnah” means soon, and “zu meiner Anfrage” names the topic.
