The idea

Build the email in four steps: Betreff (“Kautionsabrechnung – Wohnung Musterstraße 5”), Anrede (“Sehr geehrte Frau Weber,”), the enquiry, and the Grußformel (“Mit freundlichen Grüßen”). The core verb is sich nach etwas erkundigen; nach takes the dative, so it is “nach dem Stand”. Stating a fact first (“Die Wohnungsübergabe fand zum vereinbarten Zeitpunkt statt”) shows you kept your side of the agreement before you ask. Settling a deposit often takes a while when utility bills are still open, so a neutral status question fits better than a demand.

Other ways to say it

“Darf ich fragen, wann ich mit der Rückzahlung der Kaution rechnen kann?” – Polite and direct; asks for a time frame rather than a status.

“Gibt es schon Neuigkeiten zur Abrechnung meiner Mietkaution?” – Slightly lighter; fits a landlord you have a friendly relationship with.

Watch out

“Ich möchte nach dem Stand der Kautionsabrechnung erkundigen.” → “Ich möchte mich nach dem Stand der Kautionsabrechnung erkundigen.”: Erkundigen is always reflexive when you ask about something: you inform yourself. Without mich the sentence sounds incomplete to German readers.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like to enquire about the current status of the deposit accounting.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich möchte mich nach dem aktuellen Stand der Kautionsabrechnung erkundigen.

The modal “möchte” sits in second position, “mich” follows as the reflexive pronoun, and the infinitive “erkundigen” closes the sentence. “Der Kautionsabrechnung” is genitive, attached to “Stand”.

  2. Put the words in order: benötigt / Bitte / mir / mir / mit / noch / ob / Sie / teilen / Unterlagen / von / werden

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte teilen Sie mir mit, ob noch Unterlagen von mir benötigt werden.

“Mitteilen” is separable, so “mit” goes to the end of the main clause before the comma. The ob-clause is a yes/no question in reported form, with the passive “benötigt werden” at the end.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thank you for your response to my enquiry.

    Show answer or example answer

Vielen Dank für Ihre Rückmeldung zu meiner Anfrage.

“Vielen Dank für” takes the accusative (“Ihre Rückmeldung”), while “zu meiner Anfrage” uses the dative after zu. A thank-you in advance closes a formal request without pressure.

Use it today

Write a five-sentence email to a former landlord: give your old address and handover date, ask about the deposit settlement, and ask whether anything is still missing from you.
