The idea

Such a message to a friend uses du and follows a positive–limit–solution pattern. “Sich freuen auf + accusative” expresses anticipation (looking forward), unlike “sich freuen über” (pleased about something that happened). “Allerdings” after the verb softens a restriction. Times are given with “ab” (from) and “bis zum Nachmittag” (until the afternoon). Offer an alternative with “kannst du gern …” and close with a shared plan: “Abends planen wir dann etwas zusammen.”

Other ways to say it

“Tagsüber muss ich leider arbeiten, aber abends habe ich Zeit.” – Neutral and compact; covers the whole visit.

“Ich bin am Donnerstag erst ab fünf zu haben.” – Colloquial; “zu haben sein” means to be available.

Watch out

“Ich freue mich über deinen Besuch nächste Woche.” → “Ich freue mich auf deinen Besuch nächste Woche.”: For something still in the future, German uses sich freuen auf. Sich freuen über is for something happening now or already past.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I am looking forward to your visit next week.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich freue mich auf deinen Besuch nächste Woche.

“Sich freuen auf” takes the accusative: “deinen Besuch”. “Nächste Woche” is an accusative time phrase without a preposition.

  2. Put the words in order: ab / bin / frei / Für / gemeinsame / ich / siebzehn / Uhr / Unternehmungen

    Show answer or example answer

Für gemeinsame Unternehmungen bin ich ab siebzehn Uhr frei.

“Für gemeinsame Unternehmungen” comes first to set the topic; “bin” follows, and “ab siebzehn Uhr frei” gives the exact limit.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we will plan something together in the evening.

    Show answer or example answer

Abends planen wir dann etwas zusammen.

“Abends” means in the evenings in general. With “dann” the plan links to the earlier restriction, and “zusammen” stresses the shared time.
