The idea

Applications in Germany are usually formal: Sie, “Sehr geehrte Frau …” with the contact’s name if known, and “Mit freundlichen Grüßen”. Open with thanks (“Vielen Dank für die Einladung zum persönlichen Gespräch”), then decline the date without long explanations. Give times with “ab” (from) and “nach” (after). “Wäre möglich” in Konjunktiv II sounds flexible. Ask the employer to choose with “Bitte teilen Sie mir mit, welche …”, and promise to confirm.

Other ways to say it

“Leider kann ich den vorgeschlagenen Termin nicht wahrnehmen.” – Formal; “einen Termin wahrnehmen” means to attend an appointment.

“Gern komme ich alternativ am Dienstagvormittag zu Ihnen.” – Friendly and formal; signals strong interest.

Watch out

“Vielen Dank für die Einladung für das Gespräch.” → “Vielen Dank für die Einladung zum Gespräch.”: German invites you “zu” something: die Einladung zum Gespräch, zur Feier. Using für twice copies English and sounds wrong.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Thank you for the invitation to an in-person interview.

    Show answer or example answer

Vielen Dank für die Einladung zum persönlichen Gespräch.

“Vielen Dank für” plus accusative is the standard formal opener. “Zum persönlichen Gespräch” combines zu + dem; persönlich means in person.

  2. Put the words in order: ab / Dienstag / Mittwoch / möglich / nach / oder / Uhr / vierzehn / wäre / zehn

    Show answer or example answer

Dienstag ab zehn oder Mittwoch nach vierzehn Uhr wäre möglich.

Two time options joined by oder count as one idea, so the singular “wäre” follows. “Ab zehn” and “nach vierzehn Uhr” set the earliest start.

  3. Write this sentence in German: After your reply, I will confirm the chosen appointment.

    Show answer or example answer

Nach Ihrer Rückmeldung bestätige ich den gewählten Termin.

“Nach Ihrer Rückmeldung” comes first, so “bestätige” follows. “Den gewählten Termin” uses a participle as adjective: the appointment you choose.

Use it today

A company invites you to an interview on a day you are travelling. Write a formal reply thanking them and offering two other time windows.
