Write a balanced opinion on phone-free meals in German

The idea

Speak about your own behaviour (möchte ich, meistens) before judging others; it makes the text less preachy. Fände ich (Konjunktiv II of finden) softens criticism of a strict rule. Manche Menschen müssen … gives a concrete counter-argument. Hilfreich wäre presents the compromise as a suggestion. The last sentence uses sich lassen + infinitive, a common way to say something “can be done”.

Other ways to say it

“Beim Essen lasse ich mein Handy am liebsten in der Tasche.” – Casual personal habit; am liebsten means preferably.

“Ein komplettes Handyverbot am Tisch halte ich für übertrieben.” – Clear critical view of a strict rule; slightly firmer.

Examples

• Bei gemeinsamen Mahlzeiten möchte ich mein Handy meistens beiseitelegen.During shared meals, I usually want to put my phone aside.
• So kann ich dem Gespräch leichter folgen. That makes it easier for me to follow the conversation.
• Eine starre Regel ohne Ausnahmen fände ich jedoch unpraktisch.I would find a rigid rule without exceptions impractical, however.
• Manche Menschen müssen für wichtige Rückmeldungen erreichbar bleiben. Some people need to remain reachable for important responses.
• Hilfreich wäre eine kurze Absprache zu Beginn.A brief agreement at the start would be helpful.
• Dann lassen sich Aufmerksamkeit und notwendige Erreichbarkeit verbinden. Then attention and necessary availability can be combined.

Watch out

“So kann ich das Gespräch leichter folgen.” → “So kann ich dem Gespräch leichter folgen.”: Folgen takes a dative object, so it must be dem Gespräch. English “follow the conversation” has a direct object, which leads learners to the accusative.

Try it yourself

1. Translate into German: During shared meals, I usually want to put my phone aside.

   Show answer or example answer

Bei gemeinsamen Mahlzeiten möchte ich mein Handy meistens beiseitelegen.

“Bei gemeinsamen Mahlzeiten” uses bei + dative plural without article, so the adjective ends in -en. “Beiseitelegen” is one word and stays together as an infinitive after möchte.

2. Put the words in order: Ausnahmen / Eine / fände / ich / jedoch / ohne / Regel / starre / unpraktisch

   Show answer or example answer

Eine starre Regel ohne Ausnahmen fände ich jedoch unpraktisch.

“Fände” is the Konjunktiv II of finden and makes the judgement hypothetical: if there were such a rule. “Ohne Ausnahmen” uses ohne + accusative plural.

3. Write this sentence in German: Then attention and necessary availability can be combined.

Dann lassen sich Aufmerksamkeit und notwendige Erreichbarkeit verbinden.

“Lassen sich … verbinden” means “can be combined”. The two subjects “Aufmerksamkeit und notwendige Erreichbarkeit” follow the reflexive verb, and “dann” refers to the agreement.

Your flatmates want a no-phones rule at dinner. Write a short message with your view, one exception you think is fair, and a compromise.
